Indeed, with all these chiefs and politicians on an apology tour, where is the apology for billions in damages to our cities, enabled by leaders that failed their communities.
I agree 100% with this article and I'm a retired Chief of Police. I am retired because of the very reasons cited. The politicians in the jurisdictions where I served didn't like the truth and didn't like the fact that I backed the troops that were out there working every day. The idea that some people need to go to jail and sometimes officers need to forcibly do their job makes them squeamish. Eventually, in both jurisdictions, I was told that I could be fired without reason if I kept doing what I was doing. I found other jobs BEFORE they had the opportunity to fire me. I didn't want to give them the satisfaction!
Unfortunately police chiefs and police commanders with ANY intestinal fortitude are going to become more and more uncommon because the politicians are, in a large percentage of cases (not all), only appointing "yes-men/women" who will comply with their wishes and obey their politically correct desires. We all know that this is NOT leadership. This will not end well when it comes to civilized behavior in our society. These people who have no guts and who are appointed chiefs of police only take the job for the pay and the inflation it provides for their ego. They are selfish narcissists, not leaders!
Contrast this with the conservative sheriffs (which is most of them) throughout the nation who have spoken against the woke culture and support their deputies and conduct their law enforcement duties as we all know it needs to be done. They tell it like it is! Why? Because they are elected by the silent majority in this nation! They don't answer to anyone but their constituents and reflect what most of the people want.
I loved my job as a police officer! From the day I was hired until the day I retired! I have been asked by some to apply for jobs as a chief and I have refused. Why? I wouldn't survive for more than six to twelve months. I don't care if the politicians in any given jurisdiction are conservative, they still want their chiefs to "tread lightly". "Go along to get along" just so they can get re-elected.
I am still a rabid supporter of the police - my son is currently an officer in Indiana. Being critical of police leaders does NOT contradict a person's support for officers nor the profession as a whole. Maybe if more law enforcement leaders spoke the truth and called out the woke people in our society things would start moving in a desirable direction, but I don't see that occurring anytime soon. For those of you still working in law enforcement, God Bless! You are doing God's work and you are making a difference! Stay safe!
Thank you for your service & for your thoughtful comment! You are spot on.
It's a sad shame that REAL police leaders are being driven away. And why? For doing their jobs as the law prescribes. How backwards is that? My other fear is that the weakness we see in leadership is trickling down to rank-and-file.

And yet they continue to grovel to their critics. We all deserve better.
Very well said
Thank you!

Fellow Substacker, Police Law News recently published an excellent piece about the difference in leadership between chiefs & sheriffs. https://policelawnews.substack.com/p/sheriff-is-chief
Best.
