Tired of the Assaults on Cops? Tell Lawmakers to Back the Blue
We need help advancing this bill and others like it through Committee
Last year marked the highest rate of assaults on police officers within the past decade, per a disturbing report published earlier this year by the FBI.
We saw these statistics play out in real time over the past 24 hours, with four police officers in two separate incidents being shot at. All officers, two with the Pennsylvania State Police and two with the Chesapeake Police Department in Virginia, are thankfully expected to survive.
In its report, the Bureau also announced that between 2021 and 2024, more officers were feloniously killed than during any consecutive four-year period over the past 20 years.
The war on police is real (in more ways that one). Thankfully, several federal legislative bills have been introduced this congressional session that offer intervention.
One of these is the Back the Blue Act of 2025 (H.R. 4310), new bipartisan legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. Don Bacon (NE-2) and Jared Golden (ME-2) that imposes mandatory minimum penalties for killing, attempting to kill, or assaulting an officer of the law.
You can read more about the penalties and the bill, here.
How This Bill Differs
Typically, in order for federal courts to intervene in cases involving an assault on a state or local officer, there needs to be a federal nexus; for example the officer was assisting a federal agency with a case.
The Back the Blue Act of 2025 notably extends legal protections to local and state officers whose agencies receive federal funding.
The federal government, especially the Department of Justice (DOJ) issues grants to local and state law enforcement agencies to support them with crime-fighting, community policing, hiring, training, improving technology, and similar initiatives. Two programs you may have heard of are Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program.
The COPS program alone has issued more than $20 billion to about 15,000 state and local police agencies since 1994. In fiscal year 2024, COPS awarded $157,155,896 to 235 state, local, and tribal law police agencies.
This is just one federal grant. The Back the Blue Act could potentially provide federal legal protections for tens of thousands of local and state officers.

The more support these bills gain from the start, the better chance they have of being signed into law.
How You Can Help Advance Key Federal Bills
The Back the Blue Act of 2025 is just one solid police bill of several currently in the Judiciary Committee. Though this bill may be new, the others have been languishing in Committee, not yet scheduled for hearings.
We really need your help to advance these bills! Please keep your eyes peeled for a new action alert that will provide you with an opportunity to make a difference for police officers.
Best. : )
