In my previous post, I told you about my meeting with a Wisconsin representative / senator-elect to draft legislation similar to Florida’s Combatting Violence, Disorder and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act.
I have updates to share on this!
Comments are wide open. Let me know what you’re thinking, or feel free to reach out at fortheblue@substack.com.
The components of the Florida bill I’m most focused on would require mandatory jail time for anyone who assaults a police officer during a violent or unlawful assembly. The bill would include multiple layers of mandatory sentencing, depending on the egregiousness of the attack.
Though there are currently laws that address crimes perpetrated against police officers, what we need is compulsory sentencing. It would serve as a strong deterrent, and help prevent district attorneys and judges from ignoring these crimes. As we’ve witnessed here in Madison.
It would also show the law enforcement community that we understand the severity of their situation, and that attempts are being made to help rectify it.
This week I submitted a detailed, five-page proposal to the representative’s office as a follow up to our meeting.
And yesterday, I received some great news - that their office will be drafting legislative language, then distributing it to other legislators and stakeholders for their input.
I’m also in the process of reaching out to potential supporters on my end.
There are still a lot of details to iron out, but I’m heartened that this issue is getting the attention it deserves.
Once I know more, I’ll fill you in.
Another Reason to Hope
At a time when negativity and darkness are in abundance, it’s too easy to lose hope, isn’t it?
One of the things that helps me cope is knowing that there are good people in our midst performing acts of kindness and creating meaningful change.
During the course of the coming year, I will be introducing you to some of the kind hearts who are creating change for police officers. They are out there. You just don’t hear about them because they’re drowned out by the incessant negativity we’re all exposed to.
Until next time, stay healthy and safe.
For the Blue is a solutions-based initiative. I’m just an American patriot asking questions. I don’t work with any political party and I answer to nobody. For me, the health of the nation, due process (including for police officers), the rule of law, and respect for individual liberties, will always transcend party affiliation. I welcome your thoughts, even if you disagree; though personal attacks will be ignored. You can reach me at fortheblue@substack.com.
This is definitely great news. Thank you for sharing your progress and I look forward to more updates. Thank You!
This is fantastic! Thank you for the update and hard work!
