Meet a REAL Police Chief + New Use of Force Simulators
Valuable new resources to inspire & educate
There are two new resources I urge you to check out when you have some time. One is an interview with retired Chief Mike Koval, a police leader like no other. When you listen to the exchange, you’ll understand that I’m not exaggerating when I say this.
The other is a series of real-life police simulations, useful for civilians who want to understand why cops need (and come to decide) to use force.
I have a feeling you’ll be impressed by both.
What Does it Mean to Be a Strong Police Chief?
Courageous police chiefs are a rarity these days. Most seem content to maintain the status quo, willingly placing politics and career ambition before their oath.
This is so not the case with Mike Koval, retired chief of police of the Madison Police Department in Wisconsin. He’s the type of leader every rank-and-file officer and community deserves - and who every law enforcement professional seeking to lead an agency should aspire to.
It’s why I’m thrilled that Travis Yates, founder of the Courageous Leadership podcast interviewed the Chief.
In Travis’s words:
“The conversation with Chief Koval is nothing less than a Masterclass in Courageous Leadership and it is simply a mandatory resource that everyone in the profession needs to listen to. Please send it to those that you influence.”
I have a feeling you’ll walk away inspired after listening to this interview; and with an understanding of what exemplary policing looks like.
The Chief doesn’t do social media, so if you’d like to interview or chat with him, contact me at fortheblue@substack.com and I’ll put you in touch. : )
What Would You Do in These Situations?
Most of us will thankfully never know what it’s like being in a split-second, life-altering decision. If you’re a civilian who’d like to some insights into why cops use deadly force, I highly recommend the Law Enforcement Legal Defense’s new series of online simulations.
The simulations, based on actual footage of high-stakes calls, let you experience the process police officers take when deciding whether to use force. At several intervals during each encounter, you also have an opportunity to decide how you’d react.
How I wish every police armchair quarterback would take these.
I hope you find these resources useful. Please stay safe and have an amazing rest of the week. : )
For the Blue is a solutions-based initiative. I’m just an American patriot asking questions. I don’t work with any political party and I answer to nobody. For me, the health of the nation, due process (including for police officers), the rule of law, and respect for individual liberties, will always transcend party affiliation. I welcome your thoughts, even if you disagree; though personal attacks will be ignored. You can reach me at fortheblue@substack.com.
Travis Yates always does a great job! Can’t wait to listen to this interview. And I love the simulators. Such a great tool for police + citizens.
